Getting Started with Flockstar

Set up your first flock and learn the basics of tracking your chickens in Flockstar. Perfect for beginners who want to organize their backyard operation.

New to chicken keeping or just got Flockstar?

This guide will walk you through setting up your first flock and getting the most out of Flockstar's features. By the end, you'll be ready to start tracking!

1. Customize Your First Flock

A "flock" in Flockstar is simply a grouping of birds, and a unit you can track data against. Each flock can track egg stats, serve as hatching run sources, function as breeding pens, and more.

Many backyard chicken keepers only ever need one flock. If you have 5-10 chickens in your backyard, add them all to a single flock and enjoy tracking individual birds, eggs, and notes. Keep it simple.

When you first sign up, Flockstar creates a starter flock called "My First Flock." Let's rename this to something more descriptive and learn about the app's navigation patterns.

Your First Action: Rename Your Flock

  1. Find "My First Flock" on your main screen
  2. Tap the 3-dot "More" menu next to the flock name
  3. Select "Edit Flock" from the menu
  4. Change the name to something else, like "Backyard Ladies" or "Main Coop"

🧭 Common User Interface Elements

  • Orange Action Button (+)

Found at the bottom right of most screens. Tap to quickly add new data: eggs, birds, expenses, tasks, and more.

  • 3-dot "More" Menu

Appears next to items like flocks, members, and entries. It's your shortcut to contextual actions such as edit, archive, and duplicate.

  • Action Sheets

When you tap the More menu, a bottom sheet opens with relevant actions. These keep the UI clean while exposing powerful tools when needed.

  • Bottom Tab Bar

Switch between modules like Flocks, Eggs, Finances, Calendar, and Journal. Your primary way to move around the app.

  • Swipeable Top Bar

Access sort, filters, and quick scopes. Swipe to reveal more options like archived items and advanced views.

  • Multi-step Form Editor

Data entry forms use multiple steps to make it easier to add new data. Photo attachment is always the last step and optional.

Master these UI elements and you can navigate anywhere in the app.

Organize with Multiple Flocks

As your needs grow, it's common to organize with multiple flocks. Many users expand beyond a single flock to separate species, manage larger numbers of birds, or keep records grouped more granularly:

  • By Species: "Chickens", "Ducks", "Turkeys" (Flockstar works with any poultry!)
  • Large Operations: "2024 Rhode Island Red Pullets", "Buff Orpington Layers"
  • Breeding Programs: "Main Layer Pen", "Breeding Pen A", "Grow-Out Batch"
  • Multiple Locations: "East Coop", "Pasture Rotation 1", "Brooder House"
  • Special Flocks: "Memorial Flock" (for deceased birds), "Sold Birds"

Fun fact: Some creative users even track rabbits, sheep, cows, and dogs in "flocks"!

Step-by-Step Flock Creation:

  1. Tap the orange action button ("+") from the Flocks screen
  2. Enter a descriptive name like "Backyard Ladies" or "Main Coop"
  3. Add a optional description to note breed, purpose, or housing details
  4. Pick a color code for easy visual identification
  5. Set the start date when you began this flock
  6. Toggle Egg Tracking and Breeding as needed on Step 2
  7. (Optional) Upload a photo for the flock profile on Step 3

2. Add Your Birds to the Flock

In Flockstar, birds are called "flock members." Create a member profile for any bird you want to track individually - perfect for egg stats, journal notes, and breeding records. Both flocks and members are completely flexible and can represent any species or breed.

Individual Members

Perfect for individual layer stats and breeding records

  • • Give each bird a unique name and profile
  • • Track individual egg production and weights
  • • Record lineage (dam/sire relationships)
  • • Build photo galleries and notes with Journal Entries

Flock-Level Management

How power users handle larger operations efficiently

  • • Create "placeholder" flocks with no individual member profiles
  • • Track bulk egg production per flock
  • • Add member profiles only for special birds (breeding, favorites)
  • • Use flocks as sources for hatching runs
  • • Toggle tracking features to keep lists clean

Adding Flock Members

  1. Tap a flock to enter the flock member list
  2. Tap the orange action button ("+") in your flock
  3. Give them a name: Use any system that works for you - pet names like "Henrietta" and "Nugget", or coded systems like "Silkie Pen A 123"
  4. Select breed: Pick from a list of previously entered breeds or type a new one
  5. Set sex: Female, Male, or Unsexed (you can change this later)
  6. Enter hatch date: When they were born (helps track age and maturity)
  7. Add band number: If you use leg bands for identification
  8. Enable tracking: Toggle egg tracking and breeding eligibility
  9. Add notes: Personality traits, favorite treats, or quirky behaviors

Getting the Most from Individual Tracking

The fun happens when you start noticing patterns:

  • Which hens are your best layers?
  • Who lays the biggest eggs?
  • Who has the longest laying streak?
  • Who has the most unusual eggs?

3. Your First Week with Flockstar

Congratulations! Your flock is set up. Now let's build some good habits that will make Flockstar incredibly valuable for your chicken operation.

Day 1-2: Daily Egg Collection

Start logging your eggs! You can add individual eggs (selecting which hen laid it), or create "Bulk Entries" with total collected and damaged counts for the day.

Try this: Mix both approaches - individual eggs for your best layers, bulk entries for the rest.

Day 3-4: Photo Documentation

Take photos of your chickens and add them to their profiles. This helps with identification and creates great memories.

Pro tip: Photos in good lighting show breed characteristics and help spot health changes.

Day 5-7: Journal & Weight Tracking

Start using the Journal to document unusual eggs, or health checks. Try weighing a few birds. Both features help you spot patterns and health changes over time.

Ideas: "Henrietta found the compost pile," "Switched to layer feed," "Weighed the Buff Orpingtons"

Common Getting Started Questions

"Should I track individual birds or manage by flocks?"

Start with individual members for small flocks - it's more engaging and helps you learn each bird. As you scale up, many users shift to a multi-flock strategy where flocks become the tracking unit. Create focused flocks like "2024 Layer Hens" and track bulk egg production rather than individual birds.

"What if I have mixed breed chickens?"

No problem! Type "Mixed Breed" or the select the closest primary breed, then add details in the notes. Many backyard flocks are wonderfully diverse - Flockstar handles them all.

"Can I use Flockstar for other poultry like ducks or turkeys?"

Absolutely! While designed primarily for chickens, Flockstar works great for ducks, turkeys, geese, and other poultry.

"What happens when I'm done with a flock?"

You can archive flocks instead of deleting them! Use the 3-dot "More" menu on any flock and select "Archive." Archived flocks are hidden from your main view but can be seen by tapping "Show Archived" in the top swipeable bar. Perfect for keeping records of completed batches or sold birds.

Your flock is ready to track, and you're ready to become a more organized, data-driven chicken keeper. Remember, the best tracking system is the one you actually use consistently.
