Breeding Records & Lineage
Track breeding pairs, visualize lineage, and make data-driven breeding decisions. Master one of Flockstar's most underrated and powerful features.
Unlock Flockstar's Most Underrated Feature
Breeding records and lineage tracking is one of Flockstar's most powerful features. Whether you're doing simple pen breeding or complex genetic planning, these tools help you make informed decisions and track your program's success over generations.
1. Understanding Flockstar's Breeding Structure
Flockstar's breeding system combines advanced flock organization with detailed member relationships. You can track individual parent relationships, breeding pen assignments, or both together for maximum flexibility.
Individual Parents
Track specific dam and sire relationships
- • Set Dam (mother)
- • Set Sire (father)
- • Perfect for pair breeding
- • Detailed family trees
Breeding Flocks
Organize by breeding pens and groups
- • Breeding Pen A
- • Buff Orpington Group
- • Track group offspring
- • Efficient for larger operations
Combined Approach
Use both methods together for complete tracking
- • Set specific sire (rooster)
- • Set breeding flock
- • Add specific dam if known
- • Maximum flexibility
Common Breeding Scenarios
- Pen breeding: Set sire (the rooster) + breeding flock ("Breeding Pen A")
- Pair breeding: Set both dam and sire for specific pairings
- Group breeding: Just set breeding flock for general pen tracking
- Complex programs: Use all three — dam, sire, and breeding flock
2. Setting Up Parent Birds
Before you can assign parents to offspring, you need to designate which birds are available as breeding parents. This important step ensures only appropriate birds appear in your dam and sire selection lists.
Making a Bird "Available as Parent"
- Open the bird's profile by tapping on their name
- Tap the 3-dot "More" menu and select "Edit Member"
- Navigate to the "Lineage" step in the profile editor
- Check the "Available as Parent" box
- Save the changes - this bird now appears in parent selection lists
Pro Breeding Setup
For most breeding operations, enable "Available as Parent" for:
- Breeding roosters: Your primary sires for each pen
- Proven hens: Hens with desirable traits you want to reproduce
- Foundation stock: Original breeding birds that anchor your program
- Special bloodlines: Birds carrying unique or rare genetics
3. Assigning Parentage to Offspring
Once you have parent birds set up, you can assign parentage when adding new birds or editing existing ones. Choose the approach that matches your breeding program complexity.
Setting Dam and Sire
- Add a new bird or edit an existing member
- Go to the "Lineage" section in the member editor
- Select Dam: Choose the mother from birds marked "Available as Parent"
- Select Sire: Choose the father from available parent birds
- Set Breeding Flock: Optionally assign to a breeding flock/pen
- Save the member with complete lineage information
Pair Breeding Example
Premium breeding with specific pairings
- Dam: "Henrietta" (prize-winning hen)
- Sire: "Big Red" (champion rooster)
- Breeding Flock: "Premium Breeding Pen"
- Result: Complete lineage tracking
Pen Breeding Example
Efficient breeding for larger operations
- Dam: (not always known)
- Sire: "Breeding Pen A Rooster"
- Breeding Flock: "Breeding Pen A"
- Result: Group-level tracking
Flexible Breeding Strategies
Don't feel pressured to fill in every field. Use what makes sense for your operation. A sire and breeding flock is often enough for pen breeding, while pair breeding benefits from complete dam/sire records.
4. Viewing Family Trees and Lineage
Once you have parentage established, Flockstar creates beautiful family trees that help you visualize relationships and make informed breeding decisions. This is where the magic happens!
Viewing Individual Lineage
- Go to any bird's profile that has parentage assigned
- Tap the 3-dot "More" menu on their profile
- Select "Lineage" from the menu options
- Explore the family tree - see parents, grandparents, and relationships
- Navigate the tree by tapping on other family members
Viewing Breeding Flock Offspring
- Navigate to your Flocks screen
- Find your breeding flock (e.g., "Breeding Pen A")
- Tap the 3-dot "More" menu next to the flock name
- Select "Offspring" from the menu options
- View all birds assigned to that breeding flock
Family Tree Benefits
Interactive family trees help you make better breeding decisions:
- Avoid inbreeding: See relationships before making pairings
- Track traits: Follow desired characteristics through generations
- Plan crosses: Identify birds for outcrossing programs
- Document success: Visual proof of your breeding program's progress
5. Advanced Breeding Program Strategies
With Flockstar's lineage tools, you can implement sophisticated breeding strategies that were previously only possible with complex spreadsheets or expensive software.
Practical Record Keeping Strategies
With complete lineage tracking, you can implement various breeding strategies:
- • Track performance: Use notes and egg tracking to document desirable traits
- • Plan pairings: Use family trees to avoid close inbreeding
- • Document results: Connect breeding decisions to offspring performance
- • Maintain bloodlines: Use breeding flocks to separate genetic lines
- • Export data: Use CSV exports for external analysis if needed
Breeding Program Success Tips
Key practices for successful breeding program management:
- • Start simple: Begin with basic sire and breeding flock assignments
- • Be consistent: Establish naming conventions for breeding flocks and birds
- • Document everything: Use photos, notes, and weight tracking extensively
- • Review regularly: Use offspring views to assess breeding flock performance
- • Plan ahead: Use lineage trees to plan future breeding decisions
6. Integration with Hatching and Other Features
Breeding records become even more powerful when combined with Flockstar's hatching management, egg tracking, and financial features.
Hatching Run Integration
Use breeding flocks as sources for hatching runs. Track fertility and hatch rates by breeding pen to identify your most successful pairings. Automatically assign parentage to hatched chicks.
Production Analysis
Connect breeding records to egg production tracking. Compare offspring performance to parent performance. Identify genetic lines that consistently produce superior layers.
Financial Tracking
Track breeding program costs and revenues. Calculate the value of genetic improvements. Justify investment in premium breeding stock with documented performance gains.
Common Breeding Records Questions
"Do I need to track every single breeding relationship?"
Not at all! Start with what's manageable. Even just tracking sires (roosters) and breeding flocks gives you valuable insights. Add more detail as your program develops and you see the benefits.
"Can I import existing breeding records?"
While there's no direct import feature, you can recreate your breeding structure by setting up parent birds first, then adding offspring with parentage assigned. It's worth the effort for ongoing tracking benefits.
"How many generations back can I track?"
There's no limit! The family tree view shows all generations you've entered. Some users track 10+ generations back to their foundation stock. The visual tree makes complex relationships easy to understand.
"What if I don't know the dam but know the sire?"
That's perfectly fine and very common in pen breeding! Set the sire and breeding flock, leave dam empty. You'll still get valuable lineage information and can track paternal lines effectively.
