Complete Guide to Egg Tracking

Master egg production tracking with individual and bulk entries, charts, and performance insights. Learn how to identify your best layers and optimize production.

Ready to track your flock's egg production like a pro?

Flockstar offers flexible egg tracking that works whether you have 5 hens or 500. From individual layer tracking to bulk collection entries, you'll discover patterns and spot changes in your flock's productivity.

1. Choose Your Tracking Approach

Flockstar gives you two ways to log eggs, and you can mix both approaches based on your needs.

Individual Egg Tracking

Perfect for smaller flocks where you know your birds

  • • Select which hen laid each egg
  • • Track egg weight and quality per bird
  • • Identify your best and worst layers
  • • Build individual production histories
  • • Great for flocks under 30 birds

Bulk Entry Tracking

Efficient for larger operations and daily collection

  • • Enter total collected and damaged counts
  • • Track by flock rather than individual birds
  • • Add average weights and daily notes
  • • Perfect for commercial or large operations
  • • Quick daily logging workflow

Pro Strategy: Mix Both Approaches

Many power users combine individual and bulk tracking strategically:

  • Create "placeholder" flocks with no individual member profiles — perfect for egg tracking only
  • Add member profiles only for birds you want to track individually (favorites, breeding stock)
  • Use bulk entries for larger production flocks
  • Track individuals for special birds you're monitoring closely

Remember: You don't need individual bird profiles unless you want individual egg tracking or breeding records.

2. Individual Egg Tracking Mastery

When you know your birds by name, individual egg tracking becomes incredibly rewarding. You'll discover each hen's unique laying patterns, preferred nesting boxes, and seasonal variations.

Daily Logging Workflow

  1. Tap the orange + button from the Eggs screen
  2. Select "Individual Egg" from the options
  3. Choose the layer from your flock members
  4. Set the date (defaults to today)
  5. Add details: Weight (grams or ounces), mark as damaged if needed, add notes
  6. Take a photo if desired (great for unusual eggs!)

Individual Tracking Benefits

After a few weeks of individual tracking, you'll start to receive insights:

  • Top performers: Which hens consistently lay the most eggs
  • Egg quality: Who lays the largest, most colorful, or strongest eggs
  • Laying patterns: Some hens lay daily, others every other day
  • Seasonal changes: How molting and weather affect each bird
  • Health indicators: Sudden production drops can signal health issues

3. Efficient Bulk Entries

Bulk entries let you quickly log daily collection totals by flock. Perfect for busy mornings when you just want to record the numbers and get on with your day.

Quick Daily Entry Process

  1. Tap the orange action button ("+") from the Eggs screen
  2. Select "Bulk Entry" from the options
  3. Choose your flock from the list
  4. Enter total collected for the day
  5. Add unusable count for damaged, cracked, or dirty eggs
  6. Optional details: Weigh entire batch to calculate average egg weight, add notes about conditions

Time-Saving Tips

  • Batch similar days: Enter multiple days at once if you get behind
  • Use calendar view: Quickly spot and fill missing days on the Activity screen
  • Set up patterns: Note seasonal changes and typical daily ranges
  • Track damaged eggs: Helps identify nesting box or handling issues

4. Quick Logger - Streamlined Daily Collection

Quick Logger is one of Flockstar's most time-saving features, designed for busy mornings when you need to log eggs quickly across multiple birds or flocks. It adapts to your preferred tracking method with two powerful modes.

Individual Mode (Default)

Perfect for individual layer tracking

  • • Shows all your laying birds from selected flocks
  • • Simply check off each bird that laid an egg
  • • Creates individual egg entries automatically
  • • Great for flocks under 20 birds
  • • Maintains detailed per-bird production records

Bulk Mode (Settings Option)

Optimized for flock-level tracking

  • • Shows all your flocks with egg counters
  • • Use +/- buttons to set daily totals per flock
  • • Creates bulk entries for each flock automatically
  • • Perfect for larger operations
  • • Efficient daily logging workflow

Using Quick Logger

  1. Access Quick Logger from the Eggs screen
  2. Select your date (defaults to today)
  3. Choose which flocks to display if needed
  4. Individual Mode: Check off each bird that laid an egg
  5. Bulk Mode: Use counters to enter total eggs per flock
  6. Tap the checkmark to save all entries at once

Switch modes in Settings: Go to App Settings to change Quick Logger from Individual to Bulk mode based on your preferred tracking approach. Most users stick with one mode that matches their flock size and management style.

5. Understanding Your Production Analytics

The Egg Tracking screen brings your data together: a time‑series chart, month‑over‑month trends, and leaderboards for both flocks and individual layers. Use the filters at the top to switch timeframes and scope.

Stats & Chart

  • • Daily bars show totals; tap any bar for the day’s details
  • • Trend arrows compare to the prior period at a glance
  • • Cards summarize damaged eggs, average weight, and more
  • • Use the month picker to quickly move through time

Leaderboards

  • • View rankings by individual layers or by flocks
  • • Spot top performers and birds that need attention
  • • Tap a bird or flock to jump straight to its profile
  • • Filter to All Flocks or a single flock to focus results

Filters & Scope

  • • Timeframe: switch By Day/Week/Month/Year to change the chart
  • • Scope: All Flocks or a specific flock for focused analysis
  • • Today shortcut jumps back to the current date instantly

Key Metrics to Monitor

Production Rate

Shows eggs per day when viewing by week or month, and eggs per month when viewing by year. Use it to spot peaks, slowdowns, and seasonal patterns.

Laying Consistency

Some hens lay daily, others every 25-26 hours. Consistency matters more than total count.

Egg Quality Trends

Monitor damaged egg percentages, average weights, and seasonal quality changes.

6. Editing and Deleting Egg Entries

Made a mistake or logged an egg to the wrong flock? The Activity screen is your go-to place for managing all your entries. This color-coded calendar view shows all your egg entries, expenses, sales, and journal entries in one convenient location.

How to Edit or Delete an Entry

  1. Go to the Activity screen using the bottom tab bar
  2. Find the day with the entry you want to change
  3. Tap on that day in the calendar
  4. Find the entry you want to modify
  5. Tap the 3-dot icon on the entry
  6. Select "Edit" to modify or "Delete" to remove

Quick tip: Egg entries appear as colored dots on the calendar. You can filter by activity type at the top of the screen to show only egg-related entries (Individual or Bulk).

Common Edit Scenarios

  • Wrong flock: Move an egg entry from one flock to another
  • Wrong bird: Change which hen is credited with laying the egg
  • Incorrect count: Adjust quantities in bulk entries
  • Missing details: Add weight, notes, or photos after the fact
  • Wrong date: Move entries to the correct day

7. Advanced Egg Tracking Strategies

Seasonal Adjustments

Egg production naturally fluctuates throughout the year:

  • Peak Season (Spring/Early Summer): Maximum production, individual tracking valuable
  • Molting Season (Late Summer/Fall): Production drops, bulk entries more practical
  • Winter: Reduced daylight affects laying, track to optimize lighting/nutrition

Health Monitoring

Use egg tracking as an early health indicator:

  • Sudden production drops: May indicate illness, stress, or nutritional issues
  • Increased damaged eggs: Could signal calcium deficiency or nesting problems
  • Unusual egg appearance: Photos help track and document changes

Using Notes Effectively

Make your tracking more valuable with strategic notes:

  • Weather impacts: "First hot day" or "after storm"
  • Feed changes: "Switched to layer pellets" or "added calcium"
  • Flock events: "New hen integrated" or "predator scare last night"

Common Egg Tracking Questions

"Should I weigh every egg?"

Not necessary for most backyard flocks. Weigh occasionally to establish baselines, or focus on eggs from special breeding stock. For commercial operations, regular weighing helps track feed efficiency.

"What counts as a 'damaged' egg?"

Any egg that's cracked, broken, dirty beyond normal cleaning, or has shell abnormalities. Tracking damaged eggs helps identify nesting box issues, calcium deficiencies, or handling problems.

"Can I backfill data if I get behind?"

Absolutely! Use the calendar view to quickly spot missing days and add entries. For bulk entries, estimate daily averages if you only have weekly totals.

"How do I handle broody hens?"

When hens go broody, their production stops. Use the journal feature to note when they start/stop being broody. This helps explain production gaps in your analytics.
